It鈥檚 groups like the Montana Wilderness Association who tried so hard (and failed) to get Senator Tester鈥檚 mandated logging bill (the Forest Jobs and Recreation Act) through Congress who are now using their multi-million budget to highlight places like the Great Burn and Scotchman Peaks. But when groups like the Montana Wilderness Association (and the Missoulian even) call for places like the Great Burn and Scotchman Peaks to be protected as Wilderness, but then fail to even acknolwedge the existence of science-based, homegrown Wilderness bill likes NREPA, they are doing all Montanans and all Americans (who are the owners of these wildlands) a tremendous disservice. Instead of a very piece-meal approach of protecting a Wilderness Area here, and a Wilderness area there 鈥?done in conjunction with releasing Wilderness Study Areas for more development and trying to mandate huge increases in public lands logging 鈥?a better approach is to simply protect all the remaining roadless wildlands as Wilderness, or at least take that concept as the staring point. I mean, we aren鈥檛 growing or making anymore Wilderness in America, so the onus should be on those who think currently wild areas should be opened for development, not on those who think current wild areas should be protected.
